Lori Saitz is an Employee Well-Being Consultant, the Founder and CEO of Zen Rabbit, and host of the podcast “Fine is a 4-Letter Word.” As the CEO of a forward-thinking health and wellness company, she is dedicated to guiding corporations toward nurturing healthier, more productive work environments. With a comprehensive background in wellness strategies and employee engagement, her mission is to help businesses implement programs that not only improve the well-being of their teams but also contribute to their bottom line through 30+% reduction in workplace stress & anxiety, 81% more engagement, and 120% increase in productivity.

The big, expensive problem is people's inability to focus because of the conversations and distractions going on in their heads. For example, if they're still thinking about the argument they had with their partner last night, they're not able to concentrate well on the proposal they need to put together for a client today. Focus, creativity, and productivity suffer. Relationships with colleagues and customers suffer. Lori recently came across the stat that businesses across America lose upwards of $650 billion per year because employees are distracted during work hours.

Lori is currently living nomad life while cat sitting in states across the southeast U.S. You can often find her in her sanctuary, aka the weight room at the gym. She also loves cupcakes, Thai food, and classic rock music.

[00:00:03] Welcome to the Business Chop podcast where I guess speak on meeting the challenges of entrepreneurship

[00:00:09] as well as offer tips and advice on business, marketing, technology and more.

[00:00:16] Whether you are a newbie or seasoned professional, this episode is for you.

[00:00:21] I am your host, Audrey Wiggins.

[00:00:25] Let's chop it up!

[00:00:29] Hello, chapsquad! It's great to be with you again. I'm your host, Audrey Wiggins.

[00:00:33] I also known as the Tech Diva and I was usually when I'm excited for a guest today. Her name is Lori Saitz.

[00:00:40] And Lori is coming to us from Virginia. Excited about having our our Southern person with us today.

[00:00:46] My parents are from the South and so I'm excited to always entertain that region.

[00:00:51] The Lori started her business in 2003, so 2003, the Zen Rabbit Baking Company.

[00:01:00] And very interesting background. I'm going to learn more about Lori. She actually has 25 plus

[00:01:06] years in marketing and corporate communications, and she's working on here. I'm from Metro

[00:01:11] and a couple radio stations in South Florida. So she'll tell us more about that on the other side

[00:01:17] of this message.

[00:01:31] This is this.ly slash elevated you for quarter, 2024 that's bit.ly slash elevating you the letter

[00:01:40] you number four, TH quarter, 2024. Lori welcome to the business job.

[00:01:48] Thanks so much for having me. I'm excited to be here.

[00:01:51] Yes, absolutely. There are a couple of fun things and I always like to get into,

[00:01:54] I don't really like to share with us. So as you're some of the fun you wanted to share with us today?

[00:01:59] Something fun. Well, I've spent almost the entire past year

[00:02:04] Catsitting house house and Catsitting. So I gave up my apartment last year and

[00:02:10] have been house and Catsitting mostly through the southeast part of the United States for the past year.

[00:02:18] Exactly. So it's like it's like the Elman Louise and stuff you know, the cancer on your shoulders.

[00:02:24] You drive in a cross country. That's right, in fact either there would be a cat on my shoulder

[00:02:29] right now but I closed the door so she couldn't come in. You know, I could probably hear

[00:02:35] not scratch and I can let me in. Yeah, yeah, it hasn't started yet.

[00:02:42] No, Zee want to see what you're you doing as I was like when I get the elevator and you know,

[00:02:46] there's somebody, but you know if they're dog, they're always going to come send

[00:02:49] up one. You're like, no, Zee, what do you want? Exactly. Oh my goodness yeah, I love that

[00:02:59] that's crazy. You took that roll trip as a more of a sabbatical and tell us, tell us about that.

[00:03:06] You know, aside from the kids. Oh, well the sabbatical road trip was just for one month

[00:03:11] and it was two years ago. So that was kind of like the predecessor to what I'm doing now

[00:03:18] and taking off a whole year. But at that time I had my own cat and she was 19 years old and

[00:03:24] I there wasn't anybody I could leave her with. She had kidney disease. She needed subcute,

[00:03:28] subcutaneous fluids twice a week so I had to take her with me and we had the best time. It was

[00:03:34] the trip of a lifetime for both of us. Okay. And yeah, we we we we didn't go anywhere too exciting.

[00:03:43] Like again, it was a road trip. We stopped and visited some friends along the way

[00:03:47] and ended up in Anamaria Island on the West Coast of Florida, the Gulf Coast. And it was fantastic.

[00:03:56] But I did that trip because you know, I'm the one who's always talking about how to stay calm

[00:04:02] and grounded and maintain your peace of mind no matter what. And I had reached a place where

[00:04:08] had maybe lost touch with my gratitude and was feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. And I

[00:04:17] had it was the August of that year and I was just like, I can't do this anymore. Looking back at

[00:04:22] my calendar for the previous eight months just stressed me out just to look at the calendar,

[00:04:26] not even just live it again. Right. Right. And I didn't know what else to do. I was like,

[00:04:32] I'm just done. And I took off that entire month and didn't work. And just kind of found

[00:04:40] fun things to do like I said, we went and visited friends. And the interesting thing was that

[00:04:47] business two of the biggest business opportunities that ever crossed my plate came during that month.

[00:04:54] Wow. That's one of what happened with that? Well, I think it was just a matter of that kind

[00:04:59] of letting go. You know, you've heard the phrase probably let go and let God. Yes. I've heard

[00:05:06] I just heard actually it was I think it was in Will Smith's book. I just finished reading will

[00:05:12] he says that the piece of that that people don't add onto it but that he added on was let go

[00:05:19] and let God work. It's like God do the work. Instead of us just trying to always make things happen,

[00:05:29] we can't make things happen. Yeah. And we can take steps of course. We have to take actions. Yes.

[00:05:39] At the same time, we have to take inspired action. And in order to take inspired action,

[00:05:44] you have to step back and go, okay. How like see it in your mind? How do I want this to play out?

[00:05:51] How would I like to see this? And then kind of just hold that picture. Hold your vision as

[00:05:57] I meant one of my mentors used to say. And then take whatever inspired actions come to you.

[00:06:05] Like what inspiration comes to you to do? Not just because everybody else is doing that.

[00:06:12] But what are you inspired to do? What action, what work are you inspired to do? And what

[00:06:22] interesting to you or it just doesn't feel like it fits. That you can let go. Okay.

[00:06:28] Now also I don't that my father and journey that be the on the road trip,

[00:06:32] there was a book that burped out of there. Yeah. I wrote a chapter in a collaborative book called

[00:06:37] Love Warriors, the conscious experts guide to healing, joy and manifestation. It's available

[00:06:42] on Amazon. And I wrote a documented that trip and how gratitude played a part in that.

[00:06:50] Interesting because I guess because you were talking about your mind was a little freer.

[00:06:57] And you were just out there in nature and just able to allow God and the winds speak to you.

[00:07:05] Yes, yes it was really a great opportunity to get in touch with my inner voice.

[00:07:10] You know we all have this inner voice that speaks to us but we don't always hear it because we're

[00:07:14] distracted with everybody else's voices we're hearing in you know friends, family, colleagues.

[00:07:21] Everybody's trying to tell you what to do. Never mind they're struggling with their own life

[00:07:25] but they're going to tell you how to live yours. And then that's all you we hear.

[00:07:32] And then you have media, you know traditional media, social media all

[00:07:37] trying to manipulate your mind and get you to do what they want you to do.

[00:07:43] When you can get quiet enough to hear your own inner voice that's your truth.

[00:07:48] That's how you know what you really should be doing. Yeah and you speak about that as an expensive

[00:07:53] problem that we have. There's our inability to focus on the conversations and you know from

[00:08:00] distractions that everyone on our hits. Yeah absolutely think about it from a business standpoint

[00:08:05] of somebody comes into work and is working on a project let's say a proposal for a potential client.

[00:08:17] And their their mind is distracted so they're trying to focus on what they're working on

[00:08:22] but they're still thinking about the argument they had with their partner last night or they're

[00:08:26] thinking about the conversation that they need to have with their brother about their parents

[00:08:32] and what they're going to do with them you know are they going to let them stay at home or

[00:08:35] what you know all the things that happen that go on in life that are crowding into your mind when

[00:08:40] you're trying to do work. And that costs businesses millions of dollars which yeah to

[00:08:49] in time and in mistakes. Oh yeah mistakes yes yes just not just not taking action

[00:08:56] of a mistakes absolutely right when you're not fully focused on what you're working on

[00:09:01] you're making mistakes and then it's it costly for that but then costly also to go back

[00:09:09] and do it over again in time. Yes yes yeah and time definitely is money and that was

[00:09:16] an interesting statistic that you had had wrote and talking about you know the same thing

[00:09:21] across the country that upwards you know companies you lose up to 650 billion dollars

[00:09:28] here because of our distraction during work hours. Yeah and think about it for people who aren't

[00:09:34] working in an office let's say they're working in a factory or in a manufacturing plant

[00:09:41] or a warehouse like distractions and mistakes can cost more than just money they can cost you know

[00:09:50] this is exactly I was going to say in in health. Yes I actually across the board it costs people

[00:09:57] in health because when you're not healthy your it costs businesses money as well to pay for that

[00:10:05] for healthcare. Yeah that is something that's really paying attention to. Laura you talk about

[00:10:10] finding courage to do things that many people want to do but are afraid to do and then inspire

[00:10:15] and encourage us to know the take leaps maybe that we need to do. Do I dress that more?

[00:10:21] Yeah absolutely I mean this this year long road it's not a road trip this year long

[00:10:27] cat sitting thing I'm doing like giving up my apartment. You have your cat yeah I mean my cat

[00:10:32] no giving up my apartment and and living no mad life. A lot of people have said to me wow you're

[00:10:39] so courageous I could never do that what they could do it they are just afraid to do it a lot of

[00:10:47] times most of the times people live in this little box. Now this is how this is how I'm going

[00:10:54] to live this is how I'm supposed to live this is how I was raised to live but their soul is

[00:10:59] crying for more and they want to step out they want to start their own business they want to

[00:11:09] have in a different country and there are afraid to do it because what if what will people say

[00:11:16] or what if it doesn't work out and my response to that is one if the only responsibility you

[00:11:25] have I mean unless you're raising children you have a responsibility to them but otherwise

[00:11:29] the responsibility you have is to yourself we rescheduled the recording of this because

[00:11:35] because my father passed away on on the day that we were supposed to record it. I'm so sorry

[00:11:41] yeah no and I bring that up because he was 83 it doesn't matter how much time we get

[00:11:48] it's never enough right and and at the end of your life are you going to be there thinking

[00:11:55] and I really really wish I would have done that thing I wish I would have found the courage I wish I

[00:12:01] wouldn't have listened to that other person who told me not to do it that is one of the biggest

[00:12:06] regrets of the dying I'm not saying that was my dad's I'm just saying it's something I've seen

[00:12:11] in studies that say that's one of the biggest regrets people have and so my whole philosophy is

[00:12:18] life is an experiment and an adventure and when I say an experiment I mean do the thing

[00:12:25] and see how it goes and if you if it doesn't turn out the way you expected or it's not working

[00:12:32] out for you then you can make a different choice. You know we always do have that opportunity

[00:12:37] because but like a little bit of a moment ago is that we're always thinking about what somebody else

[00:12:42] is going to think and you know there may be some fear I'm just sure this fear of the on-nobes you

[00:12:48] don't know the outcome but we still don't know the outcome unless we take that chance right yeah I mean

[00:12:55] you don't know the outcome of stepping out of your house today anything could happen and so

[00:13:02] this is where it's about you know we talked a little bit about letting go of control

[00:13:07] well here's where we are taking a little bit of the control back and saying this is how I am

[00:13:13] going to live my life. Knockout your competition with all together marketing we elevate your

[00:13:20] brand take a stance with your business name logo the jackline your colors even the fonts for

[00:13:27] your business and then jack left for two websites jack right for core values back up with product

[00:13:34] experience and bring it on with you. Visit all-together.bees and let us help you create a knockout brand

[00:13:43] and doing the thing and yes there's fear and courage could be described as feeling that fear

[00:13:52] and doing it anyway. We're not saying jump you know step in front of a moving bus we're saying

[00:14:00] take take some action that will bring life to your soul. How do you help one do then? There are

[00:14:07] a couple of ways but one of the ways that I find the most one of the most valuable ways to do that

[00:14:15] is I've talked a little bit about getting in touch with that inner voice of yours and what is it

[00:14:20] telling you to do? What is it inspiring you to do? And one of the best ways to hear that inner voice

[00:14:27] is to practice grounding calming exercises so people some people refer to meditation and a lot

[00:14:35] times people are like oh yeah a meditation I tried that I'm not good at it. So let's step back and

[00:14:40] call them grounding exercises which could be as simple as breathing. Now I'm going to presume

[00:14:47] that your listeners are breathing and yes, however most people especially when they're stressed

[00:14:57] and most people are stressed a lot of their life are breathing very shallowly. They're breathing

[00:15:04] but they're not taking really deep breaths all the way in all the way down to your abdomen.

[00:15:11] If you look at how babies breathe they breathe from their abdomen. They're taking full breaths

[00:15:16] and so it's this is a reminder to step back and take focus on your breath. Let's do for two minutes

[00:15:24] let's say and focus on really breathing in deeply deeply put a hand on your abdomen maybe and another

[00:15:30] one on your chest and feel the air coming in and breathing all the way down to your abdomen

[00:15:35] and then holding it for a second and then letting it go. And as you let it go let your neck relax,

[00:15:43] let your shoulders fall away from your ears, let your face just your jaw, uncleanch,

[00:15:51] feel that really relaxation in your hands or arms and focus on the breathing for two minutes,

[00:15:59] 90 seconds to two minutes and just feel that air coming in going out. Thoughts are going to

[00:16:04] come into your head and try to take your attention away and you can just say oh I see you thought

[00:16:10] hang on I'm doing this now and just acknowledge it and let it go and focus on your breathing.

[00:16:17] Something as simple as that can help you get in touch with that inner voice, can help you clear

[00:16:23] those thoughts. Most of those thoughts that you're having running through your head are not your

[00:16:26] own thoughts. They're the thoughts of other people trying to influence you like you're remembering like

[00:16:32] oh yeah my mom my mom used to say that or that the voices that you hear in your head are not necessarily

[00:16:37] your own especially if they're not kind. Yes, yes. The unkind voices are not yours. That's interesting

[00:16:45] as you were talking to us. I started to say let me just practice that. Yeah, let's take some deep breath

[00:16:51] bubbles for asshole before we start our conversation and so doing this before you go into some

[00:16:58] activity in the morning before you get out of bed to set your the tone for your day. You could do

[00:17:04] a full meditation and that's a whole other topic we could get into or not but meditation doesn't

[00:17:09] have to be a long thing. You could do a five minute meditation just ground yourself just that breathing

[00:17:16] a guided meditation perhaps. Yeah, just to set the intention for your day and when you start doing that

[00:17:24] you start hearing more of that inspired voice inside of you. You're giving it an opportunity to come out.

[00:17:33] It could be a lot of people could refer to it as intuition and you start hearing oh okay all right

[00:17:42] and something funny about when you start hearing your inner voice in that intuition. Sometimes

[00:17:47] it's telling you things that you think sound crazy like what do you mean I need to leave my job?

[00:17:53] What do you mean I need to move to California, whatever it is? Yeah.

[00:17:58] But that inner voice that true inner voice will never steer you wrong. It knows what's right for you.

[00:18:04] Yes, we just we have we have to trust that and then just you taking that muffler on trip

[00:18:11] that's inspiring in and of itself and you know sometimes we get a chance to start over again

[00:18:19] we need to you know to take some you know safe you know changes I mean chances brother

[00:18:25] and just go for it. And so what would be some of the questions that we should tick off you know

[00:18:32] as to say why we should do it? It is. It's like hitting the reset button you know how sometimes

[00:18:40] your phone starts going crazy and you just need to reboot it. Your computer, your phone whatever

[00:18:45] it's the same thing with us we treat ourselves as computers even though we're not and it's a

[00:18:51] matter of rebooting and so you could even potentially live a sabbatical life I actually have a guide

[00:18:59] on my website that's free to download the starting to live a sabbatical life without having to take

[00:19:05] a month long or year long or even a week long sabbatical and it involves allowing yourself

[00:19:13] to turn off during the day allowing yourself to shut your computer not your physical computer

[00:19:21] your your mental computer off and do something relaxing and I'm not talking about sitting in

[00:19:29] front of the TV watching Netflix for three hours that is that's that is shutting off that's

[00:19:35] but it's not necessarily relaxing. It's not like quieting your mind. Right.

[00:19:42] Quieting your mind is putting your electronics away and maybe going for a walk in nature

[00:19:48] or or doing a meditation or baking if that's something that lights you up and brings you joy.

[00:19:54] Some people find that stressful but if it's something that you enjoy playing with kids,

[00:20:02] reading things that that give you that opportunity to just turn the volume down a bit.

[00:20:08] I like that and sometimes it's like what what holds us back? Who doing that? I always

[00:20:13] do we think we don't have time do we think you know I don't want to get involved or we do we I don't

[00:20:18] know what it would keep us from taking vote those five minutes in and there's something you

[00:20:23] know because we're constantly pushing ourselves to do this and do that and you know I've got to

[00:20:27] hear and I've got to get there do we have to get there do we have to do that? That's a good question

[00:20:34] we feel like we do and the truth is we don't. What keeps us from doing this and taking even five

[00:20:43] minutes I mean come on five minutes is one the fear that I won't get everything done if I take five

[00:20:52] minutes for myself. Right exactly and the truth is you will get more done when you give yourself

[00:21:00] those five minutes to decompress because you'll come back more focused and more productive

[00:21:06] you'll come back with more energy. The other reason people don't do it is because they may

[00:21:15] subconsciously feel that they're not worth that five minutes. Wow. I have to take care of everybody

[00:21:20] else before I can take care of myself and we know how that goes because taking care of everybody else never

[00:21:27] ends and you're never going to get to the time where you you find the time to take care of yourself.

[00:21:34] Yeah I think it's what the reasons that you said I don't have time. I won't get everything done

[00:21:40] I'm afraid I'll miss out on something and none of those are true. That's true. I mean that's

[00:21:49] true. That one thing we're still not doing getting this other thing done. I have to have to do

[00:21:55] the dishes. I have to do the dishes. I have to clean my bedroom or do laundry or this or that and those things

[00:22:00] are still sitting behind us. Undone the next day and the next day. So how many five minutes have

[00:22:07] gone by within 72 hours? Yeah that list is always going to be growing. It seems like it's never

[00:22:17] and it's never getting finished. There's always going to be something else and so

[00:22:21] giving yourself the space and the grace to take this time for yourself and then you can come back

[00:22:30] as a better version of yourself. Yeah, a better you know people who practice meditation

[00:22:36] are studies have shown that they are more creative. They're more innovative. They're more relaxed.

[00:22:43] They sleep better. They have less physical pain. They their relationships are better because

[00:22:49] they're less likely to be drawn into conflicts. So more focused. Yeah. All of these benefits

[00:22:55] from even five minutes but it's five minutes consistently. It's not five minutes today

[00:23:01] and five minutes three years from now. I tried that. It didn't work. It's about being

[00:23:08] insisted every single day and giving yourself a little bit of space. Yeah so is that why and

[00:23:15] can sleep be a form of meditation because it's like when you first wake up in the morning

[00:23:20] doing their creative juices or things come to your mind and if you're you're smart and sometimes

[00:23:25] we don't do it because you say I'm going to remember that and once we get up and go on a

[00:23:30] better day it never comes back to you. It goes to me always say it went to somebody else. So to

[00:23:35] see but sometimes writings or things have come to me and I used to before we had the no pads

[00:23:40] and we can talk into our phones. It would always be paper and a pin or pencil next to my bed

[00:23:45] and I would in the dark as I can't see my glasses or thick as you're the water judge.

[00:23:52] And I saw it just reach over and I would just start writing very meticulously or intentionally

[00:23:58] so I would get to the next line of time on writing over. And I think that's where to when you wake

[00:24:03] up it's sometimes as hard to speak to be audible and I always have to force myself to say

[00:24:10] Siri take a note and you're in a mouth with moving real because it's so hard. But outside

[00:24:18] of that that would be like our inherent practice so but what you're talking about though is

[00:24:25] is even if it's that time of day and really take those consciously intentionally take those five

[00:24:32] minutes. Yes and so sleep is not a form of meditation however what you're talking about is that

[00:24:38] alpha brain wave state and that alpha brain wave state is the that time in between sleep and awake.

[00:24:46] You're not fully awake yet but you're not sleeping and that is exactly where you want your mind

[00:24:54] to be when you're meditating. That's that is the meditative state and so catching yourself

[00:24:59] in that state and writing stuff down or or you know giving Siri a note like that is the best

[00:25:06] time to capture that. What happens though a lot of times with people is they wake up.

[00:25:12] The alarm goes off they wake up they grab the phone and they look at their emails.

[00:25:16] Yeah you're just no stop doing that help yourself to set yourself up for a better day.

[00:25:25] Because then you're you're setting yourself up for frantic and unfocused and stress.

[00:25:32] So give yourself those five or ten minutes when you first wake up to

[00:25:38] kind of bask in that time whether you've got ideas coming to you or not to just be in that

[00:25:44] time to breathe to focus what how would you like your day to go visualize how would you like your

[00:25:50] day to go how would you like to feel if you can't necessarily visualize oh I want this to happen

[00:25:58] first and then this but how about how would you like to feel I would like to feel

[00:26:06] loved and appreciated and calm and grow how would you like to go through your day and so

[00:26:14] feel that first thing before you wake up and then maybe stretch a little bit do some

[00:26:21] breathing that we talked about then get out of bed. Okay just give yourself the grace of those

[00:26:26] five or ten minutes you know nobody knows exactly what time you wake up so they're not expecting

[00:26:32] you to respond to their email as soon as your eyes open. Right. No one that is.

[00:26:40] They're probably not your small problem. We're meditating themselves right? Exactly. Well

[00:26:45] as some of the highest performing business leaders in the world talk about how their meditation

[00:26:51] practice contributes to their success. We were talking about people like Oprah Winfrey and Ariana

[00:26:57] Huffington bill Ford chairman of Ford Motor Company, Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin

[00:27:05] Yeah. All the Virgin stuff. Ray Dahlio I always like to bring up Ray Dahlio because he is

[00:27:15] what's considered an OG in the world of Wall Street and Wall Street is as about as far from

[00:27:21] woo woo as you can get. Now when Ray Dahlio is talking about his meditation practice and how

[00:27:26] much it has contributed to his success in the business world on Wall Street I feel like we should

[00:27:33] okay yeah because yeah I mean and again he's had to take actions it's not about just sitting in

[00:27:41] meditating however the meditation practice allows him to make better decisions to be more focused,

[00:27:50] to be more productive, to be more intentional in the actions that he is taking. And I mentioned that

[00:27:58] because these are some of the the highest performing business leaders most successful business leaders

[00:28:04] if they're doing it and you would like to be successful why aren't you doing it. Wow that is an awesome

[00:28:13] place to this guy you've given some great nuggets and huge nuggets I should say some boulders of

[00:28:20] expression and things that we need to really take heat up and in what's your website I'm luring

[00:28:25] how can we get in touch with you. Yeah my website is Zen Rabbit ZEN Rabbit Zen Rabbit dot com

[00:28:51] gratitude meditation. I did gratitude meditation. Yeah and you know and we don't take enough time to

[00:28:58] be grateful and there's so much to be grateful for. Sometimes we think about the big things and

[00:29:04] we complain about this and complain about that and this person getting on my nerves and blah blah

[00:29:08] you know but it's as we sit there in our you know and our apartments or our nice home and you

[00:29:15] look out and you can see nature you got grateful for even that I mean that is that is used to be able

[00:29:21] to look out and see that especially the times which you live in some people don't have any

[00:29:26] windows anymore to look out because they were blown out you know yeah yeah we got to be more grateful.

[00:29:32] Yeah that is a very big part of some meditation practices and it is really easy to incorporate into

[00:29:38] a meditation practice think about in the morning when we're just saying waking up thinking about

[00:29:43] what am I grateful for? Yeah falling asleep you're in that same alpha beta alpha rain wave
